She holds the bean in delicate fingers.
A coffee bean, it smells delightful. She turns it slowly, one side is flat, but with a valley running down the centre, it might be suitable for carving on, one kanji on each half. The other side is curved, but offers more room. Nodding, this is where she decides to begin.
She selects a carving tool, feeling the texture of the handle against her fingers, the slender tool seems to fit neatly and comfortably in her grip. She holds the bean in a firm but gentle grip and lightly etches the characters on the surface. The foundation strokes confirmed, she returns and slowly, painstakingly makes them deeper. After almost an hour hunched over awkwardly, she has carved her name into the bean.
Finally, she takes the tool and begins to add flair to the design. The rich aroma of the coffee bean has filled her mind, concentrating intently, so deep was her focus that she hasn't noticed the time that passed, or the pain in her neck and shoulders. She adds a flick here, thickens a curve there. The result is beautiful, even if one needs perfect eyesight to read it.
