IUCHI EVENT: Carving Beans (D10, EA)

[Matsu Yurio]

Yurio stared at the table. He stared at the tools. He started even more intently at the bean.



He knew what he had to achieve . . . no idea how to achieve it . . . but knew he would.

Painstakingly he carved his name into the bean, taking far longer than even a first timer ever should. At one point he pushed too hard with the knife and one stroke of 'Matsu' kanji went all the way through the bean and a small bit of the back fell off . . . but that was a minor disaster compared to some of the previous events for him. Concentration continued . . . which coincidentally looked a lot like his angry face.



He may not have the best carving skills in the world, but at least he made his name pretty and easy to read. All in all, he was quite pleased with the results.

[Ichiro Daisuke]

The bean was tiny, so very tiny and unfortunately Daisuke felt like he was going to go cross eyed just looking at it.

Tiny bean tn 20 = 17 fail.

Fail = o points

[Doji Ameka]

Ameka eyed her bean critically, looking it over. It was tiny, but she was used to working with very small things. Finally, she chose a spot that looked like (to her eyes, used to squinting at very tiny subjects) a nice broad, flat spot to start carving.

She looked critically over the carving tools provided, pale hand finally selecting one that was the closest to what she was used to using and fit in her hand comfortably. She scratched and prodded and turned the bean ever so slightly as she worked, eyes never wavering from it. Letters were etched in at just the right depth, and even had a few flourishes added in for good measure. All in all, she was happy with her work when she finished, and the judges seemed to be, too. She couldn't shake the feeling that she could've done even better, but there wasn't much for it now.

At least she could leave with a bean and the knowledge that she'd done a good job.

[Seppun Hideo]

Drawing on beans.

What? Seriously?

If it wasn't for how important this event was, Hideo would have facepalmed. As it was, this was the most important event in his life, if he was going to claim Amaya for his own.

For you, my darling Amaya, I will...write calligraphy on a bean. Hardly the most romantic thought, but the intent was.

And so he found a bean, the best bean that an Imperial had ever beaned. He crafted into the bean, with the prettiest letters that any Imperial had drawn into a bean.

By the end, he had a perfect bean. It wasn't magical, but it was his bean. It had to be enough.

[Shinjo Monkhbaatar]

Mohkhbaatar looks down at the bean sitting on the surface, and stares intently at it... only to find himself getting dizzy when he tries to imagine putting letters on it. It was a task he would not be able to perform. So he simply eats the bean and moves on.

[Asako Yuki]

Yuki sits with the bean, considering it for a moment, getting a feel for the bean, as a Shiba artisan might. She remembered seeing a couple of the artisans while at the dojo, and tried to copy them in her own movements as she licked her lips in concentration and got to work.

While her skills with a chisel were mediocre at best, there was little doubt of Yuki's skill at calligraphy as she carved out the kanji. Leaving a suitable impression with one tool, Yuki began to now pick out the pieces carefully and brushing them away gently to keep her view of the piece unobstructed. Once she was done, she did the same as her cousin and chose a purple to color and protect the bean with. In the end, though Yuki had been sorely tempted to approximate Butaj's name in kanji, she didn't want to risk butchering his name and had kept with writing her own down.

[Otaku Imane]

Imane looked back up at the judge as if waiting for the punchline. Wait. They were serious? Of all the things the Iuchi wanted to test it was the ability to write on a bean? She wondered if this had anything to do with what Khulun had been trying to tell her about. Something about magic beans and skilled hands.

She squinted at the bean for a while before deciding that she had done well enough in the earlier events that persisting with this folly was unnecessary. The bean remained undecorated and Imane went about her business.

[Moto Baatar]

Baatar held the tiny bean tight as he prepared to carve it... too tight! The bean suddenly squirted from between his fingers to fly off the table!

"Huh, where'd it go?" the young Moto wondered, as he peered underneath the table. There was no sign of the fallen bean.

He squatted down and backed away from the table, trying to get a better look, when there was a sudden crunch! under his heel.

"Found it," Baatar said ruefully as he scraped bean paste off the bottom of his boot.

[Iuchi Saksaha]

Saksaha glowers at her bean. It just doesn't look... durable. She prefers to work in sturdier materials, like wood or stone or bone. Nevertheless she gives it a go... but her tiny scalpel flakes away some of the tiny bean's thin, dry skin. She frowns and peels the rest of it off, but the carved calligraphy doesn't look nearly as pretty against the white seed-flesh as it would have showing pale through the reddish skin, and she loses some interest in making the final touches any fancier than necessary.

[Shosuro Yawarakai]

Yawarakai took his bean and purposefully made his way to the workbench he had been allowed to use. He carefully picked up the tools, unfamiliar with them but still handling them with care anyway. Striking upon an idea, he began to carve gently into the side of the table to see how the tools would react to pressure so he had an idea how they might work with the real thing. His practice run done, he began to scrape and score his name one careful and painstaking etch at a time. He finished working his name into the bean then began to add flourishing to the sides of what would have been brush strokes to make it look more hand drawn rather than hand bored. Having finished, he raised his head up to call for a judge right as a nearby Iuchi announces everyone should finish their work and present it for evaluation. He stared back down at his unblemished bead, left it on the table, and walked away.

Concentration with one raise: failure

[Ide Amaya]

She holds the bean in delicate fingers. A coffee bean, it smells delightful. She turns it slowly, one side is flat, but with a valley running down the centre, it might be suitable for carving on, one kanji on each half. The other side is curved, but offers more room. Nodding, this is where she decides to begin.

She selects a carving tool, feeling the texture of the handle against her fingers, the slender tool seems to fit neatly and comfortably in her grip. She holds the bean in a firm but gentle grip and lightly etches the characters on the surface. The foundation strokes confirmed, she returns and slowly, painstakingly makes them deeper. After almost an hour hunched over awkwardly, she has carved her name into the bean.

Finally, she takes the tool and begins to add flair to the design. The rich aroma of the coffee bean has filled her mind, concentrating intently, so deep was her focus that she hasn't noticed the time that passed, or the pain in her neck and shoulders. She adds a flick here, thickens a curve there. The result is beautiful, even if one needs perfect eyesight to read it.
