I think part of the problem is in systems themselves. A lot of them don't include mechanics for anything outside of 'kill it and take its stuff' so that's the thing players end up doing.

I once GMed WHFRP. I deployed a big something Nurgle-bred to finally humble players, especially one incessant murder hobo. He rerolled 6 for damage on a single die 7 times in a row. It was my GM die. I quit that group not long after.

I know that was a big transition for my players when I took them from D&D to L5R tabletop. D&D is all experience based off killing, and the rewards are from looting, and going to a system where you want to avoid combat and get experience just by not screwing up socially was a bit of a step.

Meanwhile... I hope Tomoe in the end will get some CP for all her hardwork in educating the Unicorns with her history lessons. I enjoy writing them up, especially since people like them, but rewards for the hard work would be nice too.

I do think combat in L5R as a tabletop game can happen even as much as one per session.

I generally plan on a combat, a courtly, and an outside the box challenge for each game session
