The mistake you make is fighting and/or being attacked. When that happens, you just restart.

Pretty much my problem too, there is a very comprehensive 'single battle' symptom to it. The problem is that most 4x games have this issue, and I'm not sure how they should get around it.

The latest expansion added a ton of neat stuff... that does not address these issues in the slightest.
