I think getting rid of some of the setting bloat is a good idea; starting fresh is smart.

I do feel a bit bad for the Mantis/Spider players who really enjoy those clans, but it's ultimately a net positive for me from the setting's perspective.

I get the impression a lot of people in the pbp community will consider it a net positive; I can probably count the number of games I've seen set after the Clan War on one hand. And two of those barely count because they are set in the future (Rokugan High School and Space Rokugan); Toturi dynasty just seems unpopular as a setting, Iweko dynasty even exponentially more so.

I find a lot of the issue with Iweko/post-Iweko is often expressed as a dislike of the Spider; I think they did the Spider wrong in the way they ended up being used and that there was no time to try to define them as actually being part of the Empire before the inevitable face-heel turn happened. I would have liked to see what they did with the Spider loyalists (the Susumu) but meh...

I'm willing to step back... after all, most of the PbP games are about alternate histories anyways.

I think the idea of setting up the Spider/Shadowlands Horde was what in many ways lead to the eventual downfall (for me anyway) of the storyline when AEG had it. Basically they gave control of the BBEG to the playerbase, which meant they lost control of that element of the game, and it also gave the rest of the players a direct target they could always hound on, and left to a big feeling of favoritism as no matter how badly the Spider fared they could never be beaten, because the BBEG would be defeated with them. I do hope (and expect) that Taint will still be very much alive, but they won't have strongholds to have a direct playerbase, which I think will be for the better of the game's health.

That's just my take from an outside perspective though. I could be off base.

I really disliked Toturi Dynasty with Oblivion's Gate and War With Shadows. Although, I liked Four Winds.

I enjoy Pre/During Scorpion Clan Coup. But, being honest the best time is now: Arrival of the Unicorn!

I don't think rolling things back to before the Coup has much impact on purely RP players. Most of us have the info/resources to play in other eras if we so choose and we can adopt or abandon their changes as we see fit.

I know some CCG players that had heavy impact on the storyline may be upset. While I get that, as more of an RPG player, I'm ecstatic to see the timeline rolled back. A lot of what happened past the early days of Toturi I was pretty ludicrous and bloated. The constant threats to Rokugan and/or all of reality happening with little time between each one made it really difficult for many RPG players I've met to take the storyline seriously.

I wish War is the Spirits had better definition though. It was a neat concept for sure.

As a dedicated Spider fan, I consider this a good thing. Basically, they tried too long to go both routes with the Spider. We were probably the most fiercely divided Faction during the "vote for your future." And I never saw a way for it end happily.

It seemed like the older players want the Spider to maintain their roots in Jigoku and seeking the destruction and domination of the Empire.

While the newer players who never knew the Shadowlands as a Faction, wanted to maintain the Spider's place in the Empire and be the necessary bad guys.

Those are generalizations of course, but I never saw it ending pretty for the players. They were just opposite what we fundamentally wanted for the Clan. Had the "pure" Faction won, I probably would have stopped being a Spider fan. I signed up to watch the Empire burn. Not to be Scorpion 2.0.

I agree. It's one of the most amazing times for samurai drama. Fighting against your ancestors? That's gotta mess people up. So happy it will be coming to Hollow Throne.

They likely will; they've already shown a couple neutral cards (Miya Mystic, for example, is grey) - so it's possible they can bring in the minor clans like that for now.

The War of Spirits really was a great idea. My only real issue with it was how they portrayed Hantei XVI. Admittedly, it was only really in the novels, but he came across less like a psychotic, paranoid former Emperor and more like he should've been twirling his moustache and tying Nell Fenwick to railroad tracks.
