Yeah, it is sort of a trade-off... keeping named characters to uniques could be a smart move, provided there are enough that the flavor shines through.

As a long time player of multiple card games... I see why they might do the more generic names, especially if they're aiming at a larger crowd of players who aren't (yet) into the story and setting. It can be pretty daunting coming in and seeing a ton of names that all start that same and then trying to remember roughly what they do as well.

But yes, I will miss the chance to jump up characters... unless they attach some flavour text to them or something giving them more "personality" where they can fit it.

I'm going to skip the card game. The mechanics seem a bit too busy (because FFG), and I'm just not all that interested in the fluff changes they've made.

Honestly seems a bit too Game of Thrones LCG to really interest me.

This too is my impression from the first read-through, which is a shame.

Don't get me wrong, I think the GoT LCG is really good and fun to play, but I would want L5R to be different.

And while some might consider it less overwhelming to have "Savvy Politician" and "Matsu Berserker" as Personalities, for me it is the opposite direction of what drew me to L5R when I first saw the cards. Unlike Magic (whic was the big thing at the time), all the "creatures" seemed unique and interesting. Like I'd see a card of Togashi Yokuni and think "damn, who is *this* guy?! I wanna learn more!". Savvy Politician doesn't exactly give me that feeling of thinking that I want to learn more about these people, but it is what it is.

I agree. I loved watching the personalities grow.

I'm also not a fan of "buy multiple core boxes" to get the full set. I don't do LCGs, but them being cheaper seems like one of the advantages.

Besides, this is just so they can make the base game playable by many players without the price being incredible. Future releases don't follow this format, as they only need them to be big enough for one player.
