But if, say, you know someone is planning to attempt to make a deal with the obsidian champion, telling them 'that's illegal yo' would be totally not an insane thing to do?

That all depends on what you know. Do you know what an obsidian or onyx champion is? Do you know what is illegal about this potential deal? More likely as followers of the Kami and being in a state of war with Jigoku that ebbs and flows as centuries pass you could say it is dishonorable to treat with enemy spies. Perspective, knowledge, authority (status), honor should play a role in how your character would respond to this issue.

Yeah, Taira already did a lore shadowlands earlier with a 43, so I assume he gets the gist of things, and while he is not honorable, (no junshin) he is loyal, and deeply hateful toward the taint and jigoku, so I think his response is 'you don't make deals with monsters who have already lost their souls to jigoku and whose only desire is to see the entire empire fall to their dark master.'

Thanks guys, just was making sure it wouldn't be totally wrong. If it falls into 'gray area' then I can safely wing it in character and have that be part of 'rokugan is hypocritical' when disagreement arises IC.

Bear in mind, the Onyx Champion is a title that has only existed for a couple of years. Even with a good Lore check, it may not be clear as to what he is.
