Interestingly enough, "lactose intolerant/shy/whatever" is actually the "natural" state of humans. Animals tend not to drink milk from other species. Some groups of people evolved to be able to do so because they needed every source of nutrition available. Most Asian peoples were native to areas where food was plentiful, so there was no need to drink milk after childhood.

What the state of lactose tolerance is these days I cannot say, but I have met a few people in Korea who could not drink milk (or it made them gassy), though they were fine with cheese. There were probably more, but the subject didn't come up much in conversation.

Also, speaking peppers: Koreans use red peppers in just about EVERYTHING so I always wonder what their food was like before it was introduced. I'm guessing mostly fermented/vinegary.

Stuff like that is really fascinating to me.

I recently learned that chili peppers were native only to the Americas amd then through how extensive the trade networks the Dutch had they spread like wildfire into the cuisine of the world.

With how much curry uses the peppers I would have naievely thought they were native to the regions that make curry!

If you think about an Italian staple, spaghetti al pomodoro... that thing is actually a combination of new world tomatoes and chinese noodles. <.<

And, another interesting fact is that peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes (all heavily used in dishes around the world) are part of the nightshade family! If you have certain health issues they become deadly!

Not sure you wanted to know, but natto became a thing after an army had a choice between starving and eating slightly fermented, sticky beans.

Awful. They taste awful.

Stupid things I have tasted.

Snakes - actually tastes good.
Alligator - bit like snake, but better.
Fugu (pufferfish) - doesn't taste like anything, though leaves your mouth numb.
Dog - Cheap alternative to beef in some countries I guess? Tastes almost the same.
Whale - Bit like... mix between horse and tuna.
Natto - like sticky beans, taste is neutral... smell's horrible though.
Thousand year eggs - actually delicious.
