Tomoe asked Hotaru not to pick Dong-Ha, whom she actually liked. So Hotaru sunk a different ship instead (having not many remaining choices of boys she'd actually met).

I am vicariously digging all the drama, but also genuinely surprised at the extent to which my goat-milking, vision-tripping gaijin witch character is likely to come out of the end of this thing looking like a proper samurai maiden by sheer comparison.

Both Hotaru and Tomoe liked Dong-Ha. Dong-Ha liked Tomoe romantically, but like Hotaru as a friend.
Hotaru knew how Tomoe felt about him, Tomoe thought Hotaru and Dong-Ha were just friends.
Hotaru, in a stroke of Scorpion-ness, told Tomoe that her divinations had said that Hotaru+DongHa should be matched. Tomoe was a little heartbroken... admitting it would break her heart not to be with him, but she could not bring herself to hate Hotaru for wanting a good man like that.
Hotaru then offered Tomoe to refrain from choosing Dong-Ha so the two of them could be together instead, gaining quite a debt from Tomoe in the process. Tomoe is awed by Hotaru giving up her own chance of happiness with Dong-Ha, to allow Tomoe to be happy with him instead.

And then Hotaru chose Butaj.

There was reasons Daisuke liked Saksaha.

If he didn't get picked by Imane, he was hoping for a Iuchi bride... They seemed the most sane of the lot...

It wasn't to sink the ship. If I read it right, Hotaru thought of Baatar as a boy, and needed to bring a man back as her husband. Likely due to her own insecurity, Butaj fit the bill.

If she had know any of the other men better she may of picked one of them.
