I like it. It's a really good representation that not everyone is a hero, but the heroes have a huge impact.

They should call them troops or followers, then. Sounds more expendable.

I could see what you are saying, though troops in a samurai game to me represent more the ashigaru. The funky names like "Savy Politician, Bayushi Manipulator, or Shrewd Yasuki" still show that they are samurai, just not as important as the named ones.

When you look back through the history of L5R, there were a ton of named people that really didn't do anything. They were there for one or two stories as background. Like when in an RPG you roll up to a shop in town where the NPC only ever sells you stuff and has no other role in the game, does the shopkeeper truly need a name?

More than likely not.

Just my thoughts on it.

I can definitely see the other side of the argument where people think it lazy and less flavorful.

It's true... followers were always a good generic option. Generic peeps is not my favorite idea.

But the game looks interesting enough. Definitely give it a try.

As someone who never played the original CCG but may be interested in the LCG, I'm excited about the prospect of not having to try and keep a million names with a foreign origin straight.

Probably less flavorful, but in the same way that MTG manages to sell flavor with only a few unique names, I think L5R can pull it off just as well, if not better.

That shop keeper had a name and a family and problems man. Real issues. They had children that didn't respect them and a spouse who had a drinking problem, and he was diagnosed with cancer, but he also had a novel he finally finished.
