If we are told what the Unicorn were told, can we infer what an 'onyx champion' might mean.

I mean, he said 'hey I'm the champ of jigoku guys wassup' so I figured I could infer his nature.

If you don't make the Lore: Shadowlands roll, then all you can really guess is "Tainted people are really nasty and powerful and stuff, yo." He's the first Onyx Champion and is still somewhat obscure.

Most samurai don't know all that much about the Shadowlands, remember.

They're mostly in Crab lands and are very precious. Jade's in a shortage atm.

Is Rokugani writing like most ancient Far East writing and written in vertical columns from top to bottom, right to left (to allow writing with the right hand and unrolling/holding a scroll with the left)? Or is it written like most modern writing in horizontal rows from left to right, top to bottom (to help prevent undried ink from being smudged by the right hand when changing lines)?

Top-down systems function well with scrolls as the main way of storing data since the need for artificial breaks disappears when you can continue to read the scroll by unwinding it even an inch.

I don't have any references in canon though.

The art our Otomo is using also seems to indicate that I suppose, but more than one source was very helpful. Though it is odd that a lot of that shows vertical writing on a vertically held scroll, when I thought that whole point was to hold the scroll sideways with the writing from one edge to the other??

I think the Occam's Razor answer is that L5R card artists aren't actually that familiar with premodern books and writing systems?

Also, decorative calligraphic scrolls (which people are more likely to have seen) are often mounted vertically for hanging.

Also proclamations (that would end hanging from walls) were often written on vertical or vertical. Meanwhile codices, letters and bookkeeping would be written sideways for ease of reading.
