SHINJO EVENT: Archery (D3, Early Afternoon)

SHINJO EVENT: Archery (D3, Early Afternoon)

Postby Mindshred on Thu Apr 13, 2017 12:55 am

The Shinjo have gathered the competitors at the archery range so that they might demonstrate their kyujutsu skills to their potential matches. A series of targets have been set up at various ranges, allowing characters to choose a target that best suits their capabilities.

Time Slot: Early Afternoon

Magic: Not Allowed

Choose a Target: There are six targets set up on the archery field. In increasing order of distance, they are the blue target, the green target, the yellow target, the orange target, the red target, and the black target.

The target the character is initially told to shoot at is determined by the number of Kyujutsu ranks she possesses:

0 Ranks: Blue Target (TN 10)
1 Rank: Green Target (TN 15)
2 Ranks: Yellow Target (TN 20)
3 Ranks: Orange Target (TN 25)
4 Ranks: Red Target (TN 30)
5 Ranks: Black Target (TN 35)

If the character has the Overconfident disadvantage, they must make a TN 20 Perception Trait Roll. On a failure, their boasting to the Shinjo results in their Kyujutsu skill being treated as if it were two points higher for the purposes of determining which target the character is told to shoot at.

Pew Pew Pew
Once the character has been told which target to shoot at, they may voluntarily choose to shoot at a target with higher difficulty. This choice must be made before the character rolls any dice for this event, and the color of the target must be listed in every dice roll; if not, the roll does not count toward scoring. Once this decision is made, the character cannot change target difficulties.

The character then makes a Kyujutsu (any bow)/Reflexes roll against the TN of the target. On a success, the character earns 1 Archery Point, plus 1 Archery Points per successful Raise. On a failure, the shot goes wide and the character loses 1 Archery Point for every Called Raise.

For every tier of target above what the character was originally told to shoot at, the character earns +1 Archery Point on a successful roll.

The character then repeats this process four more times, for a total of five shots at her chosen target.

Scoring: Once the character has finished shooting, the Shinjo will check the target and calculate the character's score. The character(s) with the most Archery Points will earn 3 Courtship Points, the character(s) with the second most Archery Points will earn 2 Courtship Points, and the character(s) with the third most Archery Points will earn 1 Courtship Point.

If a character shoots at a target two or more tiers above what they were initially given and hits all five shots, the sense of accomplishment results in that character either losing the Doubt (Archery) disadvantage (if they have it) or gaining the Overconfident disadvantage (if they do not).

Postby Shinjo Akil on Thu Apr 13, 2017 1:06 am

Akil stepped up rather quickly, somewhat eager to get something he was perhaps alright at out of the way.

Of course, he fired just a bit over what the skill recommendation was. It only made sense... save that the first two arrows just flat missed the target. The third and fourth arrows caught the left and right sides, just inside enough to count... and the fourth one inevitably hit right in front of the yellow target.

Akil sighed a bit. "I am clearly out of practice..."

Postby Moto al-Kalb on Thu Apr 13, 2017 1:27 am

al-Kalb was no archer but he was still a warrior. He had not held a bow since training as a child but he would be damned if he limited himself to firing at the same targets that the courtiers who had never even touched a bow would be using even if it put him at a disadvantage.

Once more the giant Moto has stripped out of all but his loincloth and sweat glistens on his body as he nods to the Shinjo overseeing his round, "The green one."

Always a man of few words he quickly draws back the bow and fires his first arrow. It is not an amazing shot but it is an acceptable one and buries itself in the designated target. Feeling more confident his second arrow strikes even more towards the center of the target. Getting into his stride his focus hits a zen state, even if he would never understand the concept, and the next three arrows sink into the target in quick succession.

He nods once more to the Shinjo as he hands over the bow, "Decent."

The big man was satisfied to know he could still wield a bow if he had to but he smiles at the thought of his axe cleaving into flesh. No, he would not be taking up kyujutsu any time soon.

Re: SHINJO EVENT: Archery (D3, Early Afternoon)

Postby Shinjo Monkhbaatar on Thu Apr 13, 2017 1:41 am

Monkhbaatar takes his position on the field, and explains his status as having just completed his gempukku with only basic training in archery. He is given the second easiest target to fire at but lets the judges know that he intends to target the next most difficult yellow target. He gets a nod of approval and levels his bow. His first shot is expertly places on target. He lines up the next shot and as it is flying towards the target it seems as though it may go wide, but a light breeze seems to push it back on course nailing the bulls-eye. The shot he takes after that he seems to place a bit too high, but his overcompensation for wind ends up working out in his favor as it dies immediately and the arrow drops inches and again strikes just inside the edge of the bulls-eye. After the long focused aim of the first three shots his arms are a bit more tired than he expected and he releases early on the fourth, the arrow falling way short of the target. On his final shot he takes a moment to shake out his arms and does his best just to get it within the outer ring... which he does.

He is overall pleased with his showing for someone just out of gempukku and bows to the judges before retiring from the field to make room for the next participant.

So, Kyujutsu. Yuichi didn't know anything about archery but, whatever, he was here. Yuichi expected to basically do a pathetic show but he has suffered way worse things that just show your incompetence in some random skill that nobody expected him to dominate. He was a priest not a bushi.

In any case after a quick lesson of how to shot and inspecting the others do their turns, he was determined to at least hit one of the target. He was assigned the blue target, the easier one.

He did quite a good job despite not having the training, hitting 4 out of 5 targets. He enjoyed this little game.

Postby Ide Amaya on Thu Apr 13, 2017 1:55 am

While Amaya was untrained in the use of the bow, she admired the art: the slow contemplation of the target, the careful concentration. The Shinjo had been generous enough to provide bows and arrows to anyone who wished to make an attempt, and she arrived early in hopes of making her attempt before too many people were around to stand witness.

She was directed to the nearest target and she took up stance. The bow's draw was heavier than she expected and it took all the strength she could muster to pull back the string. She inhales and sights down the arrow, arm trembling to hold the string in place. Exhaling slowly, she lets fly and.... it hits! Her heart soars.

She takes her time with the remaining four shots and, when she is done, her arms ache worse than they ever had before. However, she has managed to hit the target four times out of five, and leaves very pleased with herself.

For the first time in her life, Mizuki touches a bow. Watching the Unicorn, she tries to copy them.

She does surprising well. She manages to hit the first and last shot, but misses the middle three.

She is satisfied with that.

Butaj has a bow and knows how to shoot an arrow but if someone asks Butaj if he thinks himself a sharpshooter he will respond that he has a better command of the topshur bow. Still, it is a competition the family that taught him to shoot organises, so he won't disregard it. Ever an obedient student, he just does what he is supposed to do. Shoot green? Okay!

Postby Shinjo Liu Fei on Thu Apr 13, 2017 2:16 am

As a Shinjo some of her honor was on the line here, she had to perform at least twice as well as anyone else competing. Perhaps even moreso because she knew Yue would be feeling the pain of her loss again today, Fei had to do better than was expected of her to carry it for her sister. That was why when the Judges told her to shoot for Yellow she simply called back, 'Orange.'

With that she stepped out to the placement and loosed three arrows, all connecting. It was the fourth that shook her and place a doubt a in her mind, causing the next shot as well to miss. Looking over at how people were scoring she noticed her own placement and simply shrugged. At least it was a good showing, even if her years of training didn't count for as much as talent or, as she might call it, luck.

It was a sore point, sure, but nothing that stopped her from preparing herself for the next one with her head held high.

Re: SHINJO EVENT: Archery (D3, Early Afternoon)

Postby Iuchi Dong-Ha on Thu Apr 13, 2017 6:29 am

The Shinjo saw Dong-Ha, and duly pointed him to the blue target. Having never really really drawn a bow, Dong-ha figured he could give it a shot. The first shot missed the target by a bit, and once he adjusted his aim, the next two arrows actually hit the target. No too hard, is it. That was when he got cocky and instead of hitting the target, actually hit the arrow that had missed the target.

Rats.

Focusing once more, Dong-Ha drew the bow and let go, watching the arrow hit the target. The arrow was far from the center of the target, but then again, even in war, hitting someone counted.

Re: SHINJO EVENT: Archery (D3, Early Afternoon)

Postby Shiba Kaizen on Thu Apr 13, 2017 7:34 am

Shiba Kaizen enjoyed archery... though he preferred no audience. Kyujutsu was not a specialty of a Shiba yojimbo's training instead it was something he picked up on his own. It was much more martial an art where most of a yojimbo's focus was on close quarters fighting to protect their charge.

Kaizen actually performed surprisingly well at Kyujutsu during the Topaz Championship and needless to say the pressure there was much greater. Of course it also was not quite as hot and the young Phoenix did not have as much range time over the past few months. Regardless it did no good to overestimate his skill and he took the green target.

His first shot lined up perfectly and made a satisfying thunk! dead center the target. Drawing back a second shot and trying to follow the motions of the first the shot oddly went wide. Undeterred he shot again striking the target, likewise his fourth shot struck home. Wanting to make a good impression on the last arrow Kaizen focused in an attempt to replicate that first shot. For whatever reason like the second shot this too went wide. Don't pursue the past, that is the way of the Lion and Crane which keeps them at each others throats denying them their potential. Rather learn from the past and become greater for it in the future. Sensei is always wise, I must remember...

Kaizen bowed to the Shinjo judges and then to any onlookers before taking his place among them.

Postby Seppun Hitako on Thu Apr 13, 2017 7:43 am

Seppun Hitako, who had never picked a bow up before in her life, was assigned the closest target to shoot at. She managed to figure out which way to shoot the arrow, and hit the target twice. At this point, her arms tired, she had the third arrow bounce off the target's side, into the ground.

She took a deep breath, shook her head, then picked the yumi off again. Aiming it down the range, she waited until the bow 'felt' right, then released. She picked up the last arrow, looked down the range, and again waited until it 'felt' right. When it did, she released the string, and watched the best shot she had made yet hit home.

She had done it! 4 successes out of 5! For someone with her level of skill? That was an achievement worth speaking of!

"Orange!" Kitakuhime tells the judge, glancing above the displayed targets.

"Are you sure, Otaku-sama?" Replies the Shinjo –– hiding a smirk behind his On. Picking a proper bow in her hand, she nods to the Shinjo with all the confidence in the world.

The girl picks the arrows in hand, holding all five. She closes her eyes, and releases the first and precise shot. With an internal chuckle to her success, she rapid fires the rest of the arrows.

Unfortunately, just a single shot made its way after the first. Kitakuhime jaw drops, not believing how impulsively stupid she was in picking the orange mark even before the judge could present the challenge.

Yuzuki had never fired a bow. So they told her to pick the easy target. Of course, that just wouldn't impress anyone, but at the same time if she picked a particularly hard target she was certain to miss every shot. So she picked the target that was just slightly more difficult.

Miss.

Well, it did hit the outer edges of the target maybe it would co-- oh... judge says no. Well, if at first you don't succeed....

...fail again.

But then! Then she actually hit the target. And again!

And... just barely missed again.

Oh well. She tried. That's what mattered.
