I suppose that is right, so even with minus points if someone choose you, you still win.

Iai is a maybe, but don't count yourself out. There's always a chance of Orokos smiling on you, and even if you don't score any points, as long as you don't lose them, you'll get married in the end.

It was clarified--here's the text that was added.

Unicorn characters with a positive number of Courtship Points (0 or higher) who are left unmatched will return home, unmarried but without stigma. Those who have a negative number of points (-1 or lower) return home to shame and punishment from their families and superiors. These characters will lose Honor as if they had committed a major breach of etiquette and will gain 1 rank of Infamy.

Can a high courtship winner select as spouse someone with less than positive courtship; disregarding "better" alternatives?

People with negative points are deemed "unsuitable matches" for the honorable samurai that have placed their futures in the hands of the Phoenix. Such samurai are, in the eyes of the Phoenix, people who would only sully the name, honor, or reputation of their spouse, and thus are better sent home in shame than married off.

They're removed from the list of options before choices are made; the Phoenix aren't going to risk their reputation by letting people come back from their lands with unsuitable matches.
