Totally unrelated but I really enjoyed Ghost in the Shell.

The new movie.

Not perfect but a visually lush and fun experience and lots of homages to the original film. Nearly shot for shot in some cases.

But it doesn't allow Kakita Joe who says his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-etc grand uncle was the son of Doji, to claim to be a Kuge.

That's why I narrowed it down to just the immediate families of the Family Daimyos for Vulpine Regime. Make it an exclusive rank for the very privileged few.

I would expect clan scholars and historians to have detailed birth records of who is related to whom.

Even by oral tradition people would know who is and isn't kuge.

I have always been a fan of the broader definition, feels more like the real historical world, with distant relations all over and awkward situations.
