Off the top of my head, if you train Athletics for Rank 2 and Strength or Reflexes for Trait 4:

Unskilled 1k1 vs TN8 >> 30% chance of success
Skilled 3k1 vs TN8 >> 66% chance of success
Skilled 6k4 vs TN28 >> 62% chance of success

min: -4 points
max: 10 points

I'm assuming I'll only succeed on three of the animal handling rolls. Does that change the strategy significantly?

Bad Training for puppies:

Iaijutsu 3 gets the puppy the ability to draw a katana as a free action.

Chain Weapons 3 lets the puppy initiate grapples with chain weapons
