The miai was an interesting and cyclical journey for Kemuri. Misa was the first one he took an interest in, but he saw potential in every woman he met before Mei became the clear frontrunner. Without Mei, I would have been hoping to be picked to avoid making a choice myself.

Out of curiosity, what propelled her to the front? I was rather worried that she was too forward a lot of times between her heavy flirting at the start and then heretical speeches on how the Empire was a bad place.

That was actually the reason. No one else seemed to show much interest in him, even with further interaction. Kogo had the most potential, but was resistant to more than friendship.

Meeting someone who came on strong was refreshing. Beyond that, they had similar enough interests, even if their philosophies were opposed. He didn't know whether the Empire was a bad place or not, but was aware that some danger was coming. If there was corruption, he blamed mankind for drifting too far from the Kami, establishing traditions and social structures that promote the pursuit of personal power.

Not really.

The truth is, he doesn't trust most stories. He knows how easily things can be exaggerated or trivialized according to the storyteller's point of view. He was taught to avoid doing that himself. That's why he can't lie. So, while he doesn't doubt what Mei, Mizuki or anyone else has told him, he does question how accurate the perspective of that information is. He needs to hear and see more before he can get a sense of the truth.

He really doesn't know anything about the Heavens, but he has witnessed men do all sorts of questionable things for their own gain, including telling lies, making up stories and altering facts. So, when he hears stories questioning authority, he tends to be suspicious.

But, in time, he probably could have been turned by Mei.
