OTAKU EVENT: Lancing (D6, Early Afternoon)

OTAKU EVENT: Lancing (D6, Early Afternoon)

Postby Mindshred on Sat Apr 22, 2017 11:01 am

The Otaku have gathered at the Horsemanship Field to test the combat prowess of the competitors. The field has been set up with a large wooden target at one end, upon which has been painted a target. Each of the competitors will have to climb onto a horse (which are provided for those without one) and charge at the target with one of the Otaku lances. Those who strike the center of the target and manage to remain mounted afterwards.

Time Slot: Early Afternoon

Magic: Not Allowed

Charging Speed: In order to charge the target, the character much succeed at a TN 10 Horsemanship/Agility Roll. On a success, the character can continue with the event. On a failure, the horse just trots toward the target at a slow pace, preventing the character from progressing any further in the event.

Lancing: Once the character has spurred their horse up to full charging speed, the character may attempt to hit the target with their lance. The character makes a TN 15 Spears (Lance)/Agility Roll against a TN of 15. This roll does not count as an attack. On a success, the character earns 1 Lancing Point, plus one Lancing Point per successful Raise. On a failure, the character misses the target and loses 1 Lancing Point for every Called Raise.

Stay Mounted: The force from striking the target on a charging horse might be enough to completely dismount the character! If the character made a successful roll in the Lancing step of this event, they must immediately make a Horsemanship/Strength Roll against a TN of 10 + 5 for every Raise they made on the previous Spears Roll. On a success, the character remains mounted. On a failure, the character is knocked off the horse by the force of the blow, cannot advance further in the event, and suffers 2k1 damage, +1k0 damage per Raise the character made on the previous Spears Roll.

Another Pass #1: If the character did not fail to reach charging speed or get knocked off their horse, they may make another pass at the target, involving another Charging Speed and Lancing Roll. If they hit, they must make another Stay Mounted Roll.

Another Pass #2: If the character did not fail to reach charging speed or get knocked off their horse, they may make another pass at the target, involving another Charging Speed and Lancing Roll. If they hit, they must make another Stay Mounted Roll.

Scoring: The character(s) who earns the most Lancing Points earn 3 Courtship Points, the character(s) who earn the second-most Lancing Points will earn 2 Courtship Points, and the character(s) who earn the third-most Lancing Points will earn 1 Courtship Point.

Postby Matsu Kogo on Sat Apr 22, 2017 11:24 am

Kogo heads to the field, eager for an event where possibly, she can change her standings instead of squeaking by. She is grateful for all the days of horseback riding lessons she has taken that have given her some more skill.

She mounts the horse easily and gets acquainted, remembering what she has been taught. She gets it up to charging speed without much effort. This is finally starting to feel sort of easy.
Chargin speed roll, TN 10: 4d10o10k3 15

She decides to be cautious for her first strike, as this is not an activity she has done before. She hits the target well and in the center. Lancing strike, no raises, TN 15: 3d10k3 20

She stays mounted easily and turns herself around for another pass, hoping this will finally be the event where she can impress the judges. Stay Mounted 1, no raises: 4d10o10k3 30

She gets the horse up to speed again easily, reveling at the ability to use her body finally for these challenges. Charging speed, TN 10: 4d10o10k3 22

She takes a bolder approach and strikes well again! 2nd lancing attempt, one raise, TN 20, one void: 4d10k3 24

But she has become too bold too quick and is knocked off the horse, to her disgust. She'd leaned forward too much and overbalanced out of the saddle at the recoil. Stay mounted 2, 1 raise, TN 15: 4d10o10k3 13

She takes a heavy spill, but rights herself, finds her horse and takes it back to the corral. Then she leaves to go curse in peace.

Spears are not Monkhbaatar's strong point. In fact, he was not practiced with them at all. His future was in archery. But despite that he readies himself. He may lack skill with the weapon chosen, but he has more than enough skill with Meushi to remain mounted for the strikes he lands. It wasn't an impressive showing, but it was still a showing that resulted in successful hits without embarrassing failure.

Horse riding. He'd been expecting this. He was ready, apart from the small fact he didn't really know how to ride, but that wouldn't matter would it? Kitteh CAN DO ANYTHING!!!

Image

He had to wait a small while for his horse. Something to do with 'adjusting the tack' and 'something being too small'. He didn't really understand any of that as he was picturing how he would skewer the targets with his lance. There was some ore mutterings when they handed him the lance as well. Fortunately he was too fixed on his aims to actually hear them mention 'give him a child's training lance'.

He goaded his horse forward and had no trouble reaching a fast gallop. Straight at the target.

Too fast.

He swiped the lance at the rings and completely missed.

"Kuso!!!!!"

He wrenched on the reins, ready to turn for another pass but something went wrong. He was never really sure how it happened, but one moment he was riding his horse, the next he was watching his horse ride away . . .

Image

As he floated through the air, in his mind, he wondered why he was doing do badly at these events. How could he be so bad at these things? Surely KITTEH COULD DO ANYTHING??? He was sadly brought back to earth with a bang . . . . and a groan.

Postby Bayushi Suteichi on Sat Apr 22, 2017 12:22 pm

Bayushi Suteichi had been wanting to learn to ride a horse so he participated in the event to do just that. He mounted the horse and rode like a professional rider.

I guess last night benefitted me more than I thought!

He rode with a certain arrogance and flair about himself, proud of staying on the horse. His lance in hand, he advanced to the target and struck it. Again he was proud of his accomplishment considering he never had any training, however his celebration would be short-lived as the force of the strike struck him back and off the horse.

THUMP!

Ok...This is a new pain...oww! He got up and brushed himself off.

I need to get better at being on a horse.

Nonin looks at the contest rules and then at the spear and then at the horse and sighed. He had promised himself that he would attempt all of the tasks offered by the Unicorn, well, here was his chance to prove that.

It was a beautiful horse and he was honored to have the chance to ride such a beautiful beast. Getting it to charge was no problem at all! Now the challenging part, using a lance. He just misses, but does not embarrass himself.

Well, he could try again and does, again, getting the charge going is the easy part. This time he plants the lance firmly in the target and easily keeps in the saddle after ward.

He returns the horse with much praise to the Unicorn for their fine mounts.

Postby Kaiu Hiroji on Sat Apr 22, 2017 12:31 pm

Hiroji feels somewhat confident on the horse. The lance on the other hand feels too long and clumsy for him, and with a sigh and grim determination he is on his way.
His first pass at the target goes well, the horse responds to his commands, the lance sinks into the target, and Hiroji withstands the force of the impact well.
The second pass goes quite the same, although he gets more used to the balance of the lance, and again sinks it in the target.
The third pass... Hiroji miscalculated his control over the lance, when it goes over the target. Hiroji forces the horse to a trot at the edge of the field and returns the lance. A sour expression on his face.

Re: OTAKU EVENT: Lancing (D6, Early Afternoon)

Postby Yasuki Tomonaga on Sat Apr 22, 2017 12:53 pm

Tomonaga nervously walked his borrowed Unicorn horse, Scirocco, onto the field, the lance tucked awkwardly under his arm. He hadn't realized quite how big the horses were, how difficult to control the lances were, and how small the target was. Still, he'd resolved to make the attempt at all the Unicorn competitions. And he was, after all, less nervous than most about looking silly. Here goes nothing.

As he urged Scirocco forward, he could feel the surging power of the great creature beneath him. Tomonaga's brown eyes went wide. The horse almost seemed to glide along the ground, hooves churning the ground, power and grace combined into one.

Tomonaga gripped the lance firmly, holding it steady as they charged towards the target. It almost seemed as though Scirocco did the rest. The lance struck, sending a shock up Tomonaga's arm, but his grip held firm, and he remained seated. With scarce urging from him, Scirocco wheeled around, returning to the starting point. Tomonaga grinned, exhilarated, his handsome features flushed. "Oh, yeah." He said. "This, I like."

For the second pass, he urged Scirocco up to even greater speed, and the horse obliged him. It was almost a mistake, since he was almost moving too quickly to hit the target, but he managed to twist the lance around in time.

On the third pass, Tomonaga landed a solid hit on the target, laughing with excitement as he did so. Scirocco circled around back to the starting point. "All done." Tomonaga murmured, patted the horse's neck. "You did great, buddy. You did great."

Postby Moto Butaj on Sat Apr 22, 2017 1:22 pm

Image

Silly competitions seem to be over, finally something worthy of Butaj's dedicated effort. His is not familiar with lance as he has not trained with the Otaku, but in Butaj's hand almost any weapon will do.

"Our time, boy." He pats Huludai as he prepares to give him speed. "Hiyaaah!" Ululating, he advances in gallop. The lance in his hand feels odd, but it does not halt him from striking true and weathering the impact. Butaj is Butaj.

Day 6 - EA - Charging Speed #1 - Ag/Horsemanship - TN10: 6d10o10k4 28
Day 6 - EA - Lancing #1 - Ag/Spears (VP for Skill) - TN20 (1R): 5d10o10k4 40
Day 6 - EA - Stay Mounted #1 - Str/Horsemanship - TN15: 5d10o10k3 19

(+2 Points)

Butaj turns a little overconfident next time, and rushes forth without care. This makes his lance break as it slips off the target. Not good. Unlike some, he at least doesn't struggle with his horsemanship.

Day 6 - EA - Charging Speed #2 - Ag/Horsemanship - TN10: 6d10o10k4 42
Day 6 - EA - Lancing #2 - Ag/Spears (VP for Skill) - TN20 (1R): 5d10o10k4 15
Day 6 - EA - Stay Mounted #2 - Str/Horsemanship - TN15: 5d10o10k3 34

(-1 Point)

This is personal now. To all other Unicorn and others who may doubt him because of his parentage or conduct, he has to prove something. Lance or not, he will prove his warrior's mettle "BUUTAAAJ!" He charges like the wind, strikes like the wind and rushes unpaused like the wind.

Day 6 - EA - Charging Speed #3 - Ag/Horsemanship - TN10: 6d10o10k4 17
Day 6 - EA - Lancing #3 - Ag/Spears (VP for Skill) - TN25 (2R): 5d10o10k4 33
Day 6 - EA - Stay Mounted #3 - Str/Horsemanship - TN20: 5d10o10k3 27

(+3 Points)

He laughs when it ends, ruffling Huludai's mane. "You did well, boy. You did well." He may or may not be the best lancer among his kin today but in any cavalry charge he would add his strength to that of his brethren.

This is the event Kumahime was worried about. Horseback riding. She's not worried for her sake, mind, but the horse's; always felt bad for the creatures riding them. But thankfully, the Unicorn have the biggest, strongest horses she's ever seen, and they hand pick a few mighty steeds just for their most... 'formidable' guests.

Though no equestrian, she's not incompetent on a horse, and convinces her new friend to get her going, weird gaijin spear in hand, landing a resounding blow against the target.

She turns, emboldened, for another charge but misses with the awkward weapon.

Dammit.

Gotta be bold if she's going to recover from that.

With a mighty roar, Kumahime charges one final time, landing a devastating blow. It may knock her off her mount, but after what she did to that target, the Otaku have to quickly erect a new one.

Re: OTAKU EVENT: Lancing (D6, Early Afternoon)

Postby Asako Yuki on Sat Apr 22, 2017 1:38 pm

Yuki came out onto the field, apparently with a mission in mind. The Phoenix maiden hoisted herself up onto one of the Unicorn horses provided as though she had been doing it all her life. The Phoenix's face showed a samurai's calm as she took the offered lance. She took a few moments to get used to the weight before tapping the horse's flanks and bringing him swiftly into a charge. The Phoenix brought the lance on target with a solid thud that shook her to the core, but did not unseat her.

Yuki expertly drove her borrowed horse around for a second pass, goading him into a charge in a way that might make an Otaku proud. Once more the lance was brought on target with a solid thunk and once more the Phoenix showed her mettle by staying astride the borrowed horse. The Otaku nodded and allowed for one more ride for the Phoenix as she once more turned the horse about and gave one final charge. Letting out a yell, she struck the sign solidly once more. An excellent strike, but more than it seemed she could bare as the Phoenix maiden finally tumbled off of her horse, struck the ground hard and rolled twice.

With a soft groan, Yuki got to her feet after a few seconds and, face still solidly a mask of On, dusted herself off, then bowed to the judges and the borrowed horse that had allowed her to ride. She spared a challenging glance to Butaj, who had just finished himself, before exiting the field.

With Gokiburi at her side, Liu Fei made her best efforts despite her lacking training in lancing combat. Still, with the word circling the camp she needed to do something good to distract herself. Something that hid away from what people said. It was easy to claim something won't bother you until it did, after all.

Starting off strong there was hope she might shine here, as it were. However, after the first strike her surging spirit caused her to overestimate herself too much and too often. Forcing her to miss each subsequent hit. It was a humbling experience.

Postby Shiba Kaizen on Sat Apr 22, 2017 4:01 pm

Kaizen had training in both spears and horses... though he had never practiced all that much using both at the same time. Still he was confident he could at least do what was asked for the competition. He brought the horse up to speed and struck the target, holding on as he went and wheeled about. Again he charged striking home and wheeled his borrowed mount about.

Charging furiously for one final strike horse, samurai, spear, and target were one. The a breeze swayed the target at the precise moment startling the horse causing Kaizen to over-correct his aim and he went wide. It all happened in the briefest of moments and just like that he had faltered. He hoped that one miss would not cause the judges to be quite so critical, but he could tell the expected more as he dismounted and bowed to them.

You've got to be kidding me. I can't -attack- the target. I have to stomp on it like a charging ox and risk breaking an arm with the backlash?

Kitakuhime shakes her head negatively while taking the spear in hand. She rides through the targets trying to reach them out, but the Shiotome is not granted the honor of a single success.

We should be using katana, or naginata. Spears are for the Shinjo.

Re: OTAKU EVENT: Lancing (D6, Early Afternoon)

Postby Matsu Nintoku on Sat Apr 22, 2017 5:32 pm

The Lion paced into the trial grounds with his mind filled with doubts. He knew better than to listen to gossip and most of the time he dismissed it as simply slanderous lies yet a voice in the back of his mind lingered feeding doubts that gnawed at his pride.

He moved to one of the horses, a docile mare with a name as foreign as it was unpronounceable, and chose her as his battle steed. He deftly mounted her displaying a knowledge of riding almost on par with the other Unicorn moving her to the trial grounds after a small trial ride to get to know his mount.

Although he had accepted his existence as merely a tool, the doubt that gnawed at his pride also ushered other emotions; perhaps he was destined to greatness, perhaps he could be more than just a tool. He gripped his lance until his knuckles were white and exhaled. It was now or never.

His first strike landed off by quite a margin and although his second and third struck true the damage had been done. There was no heroism waiting for him.
