SHINJO EVENT: Egg Hunt (D4, Late Morning)

PostPosted: Sun Apr 16, 2017 1:57 am
by Mindshred
The Shinjo have once again gathered their guests and fellow Unicorn together, this time to test their scouting abilities. To that end, they have hidden dozens of small, purple eggs in the western fields. The goal is simple: search the fields, find as many eggs as possible in the four hours allowed, and then bring them back to the Shinjo in once piece.

Easy, right?

Unfortunately, it took a long time to paint all those eggs purple, and they're no longer as fresh as they once were. The smell has attracted hungry weasels, and, well... there are weasels involved.

Time Slot: Late Morning

Magic: Allowed (But won't allow a character to avoid any rolls)

Let's Find Some Eggs!: Each character can make up to six Investigation (Search)/Perception rolls against TN 10. On a success, the character finds one egg, plus one egg per successful Raise. A character does not have to make all six rolls, but once they move on to the next step of this event, they cannot attempt to search for any more eggs.

If a character fails one of these rolls, they drop one egg per Called Raise, which breaks and no longer counts as a viable egg for the purposes of this event.

Weasel Ambush!
Once the character has finished searching for eggs, they may begin heading back toward the village. Along the way, however, the character is attacked by vicious, egg-crazed weasels!

Characters with the Inner Gift (Animal Ken) advantage are able to befriend the weasels and can return to the village without any further trouble.

Everyone else must make a Defense/Reflexes roll against a TN of 10 + 2 per egg being carried by the character. On a success, the character manages to fend off the weasels and make it back to the village. Characters with the Touch of the Spirit Realms (Chikushudo) advantage reduce this TN to 10 +1 per egg, while characters with the Cursed by the Realm (Chikushudo) disadvantage increase it to 10 + 3 per egg.

On a failure, the character suffers an amount of damage equal to the amount by which they failed to meet the TN.

If a character suffers 15 or more points of damage from this event, they also gain their choice of either the Bad Eyesight (Missing Eye) or Disturbing Countenance disadvantage, due to the vicious wounds inflicted upon them by the biting and gnawing weasels. It isn't pretty.

Scoring: The character(s) who brings back the most eggs will earn 3 Courtship Points, the character(s) who bring back the second-most eggs will earn 2 Courtship Points, and the character(s) who bring back the third-most eggs will earn 1 Courtship Point.

Yukarin was no scout... but she did love eggs! And she was good at finding them!

But apparently weasels loved eggs too, oh no! The valiant young woman was no match for their evil claws and vicious fangs, but she managed to get all six of her precious eggs back with only some minor scratches and cuts.

+×÷=+×÷=+×÷=+×÷=

- 1 egg found each time, 6 eggs total!
- 7 weasel damage, boo!

by Iuchi Batul
Batul knew she would not be comparable to many of her clans people, but that did not discourage the woman to have a fun game day outside. Finding the eggs turned out to be more complicated than expected. The dense growth of barley and wheat covered most of the plains, and made it hard to find, but thanks to the smell, and the bright paint, the Iuchi is able to find a total of three eggs that she places into her basket.

As Batul returns to the Shijo judges, a group of weasel get in the way of the samurai-ko. Doing her best she tries to avoid them, specially for them not to ruin her kimono. Her little feet run as they can, dodge the scratches and bites of the furry ones. The samurai-ko hold her dress up to make the run quicker, but she can't avoid all the attacks and ends up bruised as she makes it to the Shinjo and the creatures run away.

A egg hunt! How charming. Amaya happily strolls the fields, searching for the familiar shades of purple hidden amongst the grass, on fence posts, and even in the crooks of trees. By the end of the event, she had become quite engrossed in the search, barely realising it when the time expired.

Carefully, she began to return with her basket of eggs. She noticed weasels peering out from the longer stands of grass and beneath bushes. She smiled at them, for she thought the sinuous furry creatures to be cute, and they did not bother her. She turns over her eggs to the Shinjo retainer for counting, bowing neatly before heading off to continue her day.

Egg the Second - 1 egg found!

by Yasuki Tomonaga
Smiling, Tomonaga knelt down to pick up another egg. Not bad, he thought to himself. It seemed like he was finding a lot of them, and pretty quickly. He might have a shot at this. Maybe he should-

Tomonaga paused, straightening as he heard a noise behind him, some sort of skittering. He turned, frowning, his dark eyes combing the nearby field, but all he saw was undisturbed grass. He frowned as he considered. That sounded familiar... The noise was forgotten as he moved to pick up another egg.

As he bent over, he heard the sound again. A skittering... and squeaking. Lots of squeaking.

"Hoi! There's another one of 'em. And ee's got one of our eggs, too!"
"We're not lettin' this one get away. Blacktooth, you get 'em from the left, Splitnose, you get 'em from the right!"
"Right! On 'em, lads! Go for 'is soft bits!"

The squeaking was the only warning Tomonaga got as he was suddenly rushed by weasels. They moved quickly, surrounding him. And then, the biting began.

Fortunately, this was not Tomonaga's first time being attacked by weasels. His mind flashed back to his childhood, when his siblings had hidden a weasel under his bath towel. It had attacked when he picked it up, biting him again and again as he tried to cover himself. So, clearly covering himself was not the solution. Instead, clutching the few eggs he'd found, Tomonaga sprinted away, leaving weasels and a modest amount of blood behind.

Mizuki starts off with gusto with mixed results. She finds two quickly, but in her hurry, she drops one.

Resolving to go slower, Mizuki finds 4 eggs.

Then, the weasels came. It was bad enough that these eggs were bringing back her nausea, but these furry oni came at her with the of fury of Jigoku burning inside them. Mizuki tried to run but she didn't get far. There was much biting. Much scratching. They were going for her eye.

A heimin that happen to come by and chased away the demons. Mizuki was able to stumble away with her eggs. She would not forget. The heroic heimin. Or these hellrats.

The heimin was easy. She gave him koku which will help his life significantly. The weasels though.... That will take planning.

5 Eggs
13 Damage

1 Suddenly richer heimin

by Akodo Runno
A well trained Akodo understood the importance of observation, thus locating the eggs provide a minor matter. Soon Runnon was carrying 6 eggs back to the Shinjo...for whatever purpose.

Hunt Roll - 6 Successes with no raises

Unfortunately weasels were not the ally of the Lion. Much gnawing and the usually stoic Akodo proved to have a....disconcerting grasp of vulgarity that would make a hardened Mantis sailor blush with embarrassment.

Failed....10 Damage

So it was that Runno dropped off her package of eggs and left with a clearly sour expression firmly carved into her features. And some scratches, lots of scratches.

6 eggs

Finding eggs. What's the worst that could happen? Hideo called upon one of the first spells he knew, an Imperial secret no less, and went out searching for eggs. Annoyingly, he dropped one, but he had a nice haul.

And then the weasels cometh....

Hido was ravaged. His kimono was shredded and he had a lot of blood across his body and face. Hideo was a patient man, but when he finally made it back he did not look happy.

by Yogo Yuichi
So a hunting. Yuichi found this little game entertaining. Searching for stuff was interesting and part of his duty as a member of the Yogo family. His skill was going to be tested. After some minutes looking around, he found ten purple eggs. He tried to walk slowly, wary that he could drop one.

Suddenly five angry weasels jumped out of nowhere, targeting the Scorpion's head, in a vicious attack. Yuichi dodged this first wave by a mere fraction of a second, crouching for his life, but by doing so he dropped two eggs. The second wave was even more fearsome and shrewd, they moved towards the scorpion's flanks, trying a double envelopment strategy. The priest ran and danced, dodging each and every attempt of the oni weasels to end his life. Yuichi could not believe that these animals were using such complex strategies. There must be an evil mastermind behind, and he was right.

The boss weasel had enough, this priest was more agile than he expected, so he sent his reserve to cut off the Scorpion's path. He began to laugh as the scorpion fell into his trap, a hammer and anvil tactic. Yuichi found himself surrounded by the entire army of angry evil weasels. Realizing that he fell into a well planned trap, Yuichi began to fear for his life. Bloodlust and anger could be seen in the eyes of these vicious little animals. Surely they were not normal weasels, no, they must be evil spirits from Jigoku, sent to end the Yogo's life. Or so he thought.

With a hideous hiss, the boss weasel ordered his legions to advance and destroy the scorpion. The weasel troops charged as one. But he made a mistake. The boss didn't count that Yuichi could jump so high and so far. The Scorpion began to run towards the boss weasel, without fear, time seemed to pass slower as Yuichi approached the boss.

Using all his strength and agility, Yuichi jumped, passing over the boss weasel. This maneuver made the entire weasel army to crash with one another. Confusion and chaos reigned among the ranks of the weasel army. The boss weasel was crushed under the weight of his own troops. Yuichi won a decisive victory.

Yuichi arrived tired but unscathed. Eight eggs he saved.

Foraging! Such a manly, responsible activity. Butaj is not an expert on omelets making but he measures the appetite of the one he would like to make an omelet for by his own, and so he pushes his senses to the limit!

Day 4 - LM - Let's Find Some Eggs! - Investigation (Unskilled) - TN10 x6: 6#2d10 14 13 10 11 12 14 - All succeed, Butaj is amazed with himself

Egg-endowed, he must now avoid angry weasel mommas! Those are very angry and Butaj cannot blame them, he would be defending his unborn little ones with the same ferocity, but such is the sad reality of the food chain. They take some revenge, and Butaj thinks it is only fair.

Day 4 - LM - Weasel Ambush! - Ref/Defence, VP - TN22: 4d10o10k3 14 - missed by 8 (actually 6, forgot Shinjo Tech gets a flat bonus on VP spending)

So Butaj has to give up the eggs to the judges now? No omelet... Maybe they return them after counting?

And weasels don't lay eggs but eat them too? Butaj still needs to be enlightened on the matter.

Hunting eggs? A little strange, but as always Taichi was up for the challenge. Rushing gloriously forth, he had little difficulty finding the eggs that had been hidden. He always seemed to be finding them one by one though, and he was sure that the other competitors were having better luck than he.

And then he saw it. A bulging shrub with a hint of purple within. This was definitely the mother lode. The hunter stalked his prey, slowly... slowly... and then pounced.

Cleaning the rotten egg off his hands, he looked around to see if anyone had been watching. Clearly it had been a trap. A foul-smelling trap. There was no way that he would fumble the eggs and drop them.

As he turned to return, he was a little disappointed but hiding it well. Then he spotted his next foes arrayed before him, their wicked eyes trying to stare him down. They had clearly been lured by the smell of the trap that had been laid against him. Raising his shield he charged forward mightily, swatting left and right while clutching the eggs to his chest with his free hand. Emerging unscathed at the other end, he handed over the eggs. It would all have looked very heroic if his foes weren't weasels.

[ooc]
5 tries with 0 raises (TN10) - 5 successes - 5 eggs
Last try with 1 raise to put me above the pack - TN15 - fail. Down to 4 eggs.

Final total: 4 points, no damage

Kemuri was a hunter. Hunting eggs should be easy. The armor might have seemed excessive. But, it was what he wore while hunting and they were out in the western fields, away from the village. Regardless, it turned our to be a good idea.

He soon found egg after egg, gathering both armfuls and only dropping two as he made his way back. That was when the weasels struck. They were quick and viscious, happy to nip at him when they.could not reach the eggs. The Shinjo was fast as well, but it was luck and his armor that kept them from getting more than a couple bites of him.

Monkhbaatar does what he can to find eggs but this wasn't his forte when it came to finding things. He was usually more about looking for tracks or finding paths in the wilderness. The Shinjo does what he can to seek out the eggs that have been hidden and finds a handful of them.

On the way back he is annoyed by some of the weasels that are attracted to the nearby eggs but it's more of a nuisance than a real assault to him.

by Shiba Kaizen
Shiba Kaizen had never hunted for eggs. Still he was trained to notice the unexpected in any surrounding. He did think it odd however that some of the competitors felt the need for armor. Maybe they were simply training with the additional weight? Not a bad idea really especially in this heat though a kabuto would make the search a bit more difficult. Fortunately they were not here to stalk prey at least for those electing to wear armor.

Kaizen found his path of choice and was feeling really fortunate. Before he knew it he had ten eggs gathered. He doubled back and on the return found three more in one well concealed nook. This was really going Kaizen's way... till they weren't. Not two steps and masses of elongated fur sprang up from out of nowhere. In a fury Kaizen oddly found himself in a brief but vicious struggle as it ended as quickly as it had began.

Kaizen wondered back into the village bleeding a bit more than he had expected from his encounter. Light headed from the adrenaline departing he laughed, "Armor... HA!" Understanding at last.

Well.

That was something.

The egg hunt itself came easily to Tsukimi, she had no trouble finding eggs, though she did not find as many as some other samurai, she was pleased with her haul.

Getting them back to the judges was an exercise, and she was attacked by a few hungry weasels, who took pieces of Tsukimi.

Pesky weasels.
