Hiroji nods. "I have traversed many a rough paths. I will give up only when I succeed, or fail." He says with grim determination.
And then again, silence comes over them, as Hiroji refills his cup. Next he speaks, his voice slightly more relaxed, his face is thoughtful. "My father was a man who expected nothing from us except adequacy. He used to enlist our help in ferrying building materials where they were needed. Me, my sister, and my brother. One day we were ferrying rocks for something or other. I don't remember for what, for that memory is dominated by one singular scene. My brother, Yashashi, dropped a large heavy stone by accident, it landed on my sister's feet. She screamed and we came to a stop. My father inspected her foot and surmised that she could not walk without aid." At this point Hiroji frowns thoughtfully. "My father, without blinking, left her there and continued walking. I asked him what he was doing. Do you know what he said?" Hiroji seems to grow angrier. "He said, "She is unable to move. She is your sister. I will not help her, your brother will not help her, yet the rocks must be delivered." and he continued walking, ignoring my objections and hurrying Yashashi along." Hiroji bites his lip. "For a moment I stood there, flabbergasted. My sister crying behind me, and my father walking away from me. I know now what he taught me. There are times, many times, when those close to you, your family your siblings your fellow samurai, are unable to carry their own burden. And so you must do it for them, you must carry their responsibility for their honor and well being. You must carry the responsibility of their lives." He is silent for a moment. "And Chi-Pu died because I was unable to do my duty. I was unable to carry the burden of her survival." He is silent again. Longer this time. "So I carried my sister, and her rocks. It went slowly, and we arrived almost half a day later to where we had to deliver the rocks. And my father looked at me, and he said "You are late." And then my sister's leg was treated, afterwards we walked the trek back to my home." He drinks deeply from his sake cup.
